A thorough extraoral and intraoral examination is a routine part of each hygiene appointment.
We check for any variances from normal, or any changes from the previous appointment. This Cancer Examination will allow any serious condition to be caught at the earliest possible time when treatment is the most effective.
The extraoral assessment includes an inspection of the face, head, and neck. We detect any abnormalities in TMJ, lymph nodes and salivary glands such as swelling, enlargement, hard ( firm) consistency, irregularities or tenderness under palpation.
The intraoral examination includes appraisal of lips, tongue, cheeks, hard and soft palate, floor of the mouth, throat, uvula and tonsils. Changes in color, texture, and presence of ulcerations, lesions, swelling or inflammation are early indication of some systemic diseases, inflammatory conditions or even cancer.
The Importance of Early Detection
Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the potentially disfiguring effects of oral cancer and possibly save our patient’s life.
